Experience

I am a social and developmental psychologist with diverse teaching experience and endless enthusiasm for the learning process. I taught psychology at the university level while completing my PhD and Masters at the University of Cambridge, tutored elementary and middle school students while an undergraduate at Smith College, and currently work as research consultant for an academic publisher (Macmillan) designing multimedia exercises that develop students’ ability to ‘think like a scientist’. I also have extensive experience presenting specialist information to diverse audiences in writing and in person and reviewing manuscripts ranging from student essays to psychology textbooks. For these reasons, I am adept in helping students understand challenging material, develop critical thinking skills, and express themselves effectively and persuasively in writing. As a psychology teacher, I invite students to engage meaningfully with theory by asking why it matters, how it is useful, and by thinking creatively about its applications. This approach scaffolds depth of comprehension and intellectual curiosity. As a writing tutor, I invite students to think carefully about their audience and support them in developing a writing style that is clear, compelling and authentic. This approach helps students craft college essays that stand out, and acquire writing skills that are valuable in college. Having been home schooled during middle school myself, I am familiar with education outside of the traditional school context. Of equal importance to my topical expertise is my genuine passion for education and communication, which helps students, especially those who may be struggling or anxious about academic challenges, to approach learning and writing with excitement. Likewise, my background directing programming for middle school, high school and college students of diverse backgrounds means that I am practiced in building rapport with students of varying personalities and learning styles. Summer is the perfect time for students to get a head start on their next academic challenge – be in touch and let’s talk about how I can help!
